Dupree Elementary’s Joseph ‘Handsome’ Brewer, a third grader and the son of Tashina Brewer, was recognized by multiple officers, detectives, and other state officials as part of a program they do during National Crime Victims Rights Week.

On Tuesday morning in Brewer’s classroom, in front of his classmates in Dupree, South Dakota, U.S Attorney  Randy Seiler, presented a plaque to Brewer for his calm and quick thinking behavior that saved the life of Roy Hale Jr. on Dec. 8, 2015.

The young boy was 8 at the time and came home to find Hale very badly beaten and bloody and after checking the home for anyone else that may be injured, mainly looking for his mom, he quickly headed to a neighbor to seek help for the injured man in his living room.  Hale’s sister Mary Little Star said that he was very close to death but survived due to the quick action of Brewer.

Along with the plaque, Brewer received a special medal, and some toys. In addition, he and his third grade class enjoyed cake with the visiting guests.
