Two Republican former attorneys general have endorsed Democratic attorney general nominee Randy Seiler, he announced Wednesday.

The endorsements came from Mark Meierhenry and Roger Tellinghuisen. A joint statement from the two men was included in Seiler’s news release about their endorsement.

“As Republicans and former attorneys general, we are asking that you support the best qualified candidate to be South Dakota’s next attorney general,” the statement said. “This year that candidate is Randy Seiler, a Democrat and an experienced prosecutor, who has served as our state’s U.S. Attorney. We know from experience that this is an important job and that is why we are supporting Randy Seiler this November.”

Seiler called the endorsement “yet another example of how this race transcends party lines” and said, “It emphasizes the importance of electing someone who is ready to keep South Dakota safe.”

Meierhenry served as South Dakota’s 26th attorney general from 1979 to 1987. He now practices law in Sioux Falls.

Tellinghuisen succeeded Meierhenry as South Dakota’s 27th attorney general in 1987, serving until 1991 before returning to private practice. Tellinghuisen practices in Rapid City.

Seiler said Tuesday on Twitter that he had also received the endorsement of the National Association of Police Organizations.

Seiler faces Republican Jason Ravnsborg in the Nov. 6 general election.
